G3 stands for Get Skilled, Get a Job, Give Back. It is an aid route to investigate alongside a specific program, not a reason to assume that every community college class is free.
Confirm the approved program
The Virginia Community Colleges FAQ describes selected fields including skilled trades, manufacturing and construction. Approval varies by program and college. Ask the aid office or workforce coach to identify your exact credential before comparing costs.
Use the correct enrollment rules
Virginia's G3 statute distinguishes credit-bearing study of at least six credits per semester from eligible noncredit programs. The six-credit rule should not be used to dismiss all short noncredit training.
The income ceiling is 400% of federal poverty guidelines. Have the college apply the current guidelines to your household; a rounded dollar illustration on a website is not a personalized threshold. The college also assesses in-state tuition status and other requirements.
Ask for one coordinated estimate
G3 is last-dollar assistance: other applicable aid is considered before its contribution. The FAQ describes help with tuition, fees and books, but this is not a promise that every attendance expense disappears.
Ask which applications apply to your route and how G3 relates to any FastForward funding discussion. Request one statement of confirmed support, pending decisions and remaining costs. Do not add different websites' maximums together.
Plan beyond the first payment
Ask about academic progress, changes to your course load and what happens if you pause or withdraw. A manageable training plan needs a sustainable schedule as well as an initial aid decision. Funding approval is not a guarantee of employment.
Compare Virginia funding routes and the FastForward funding guide before choosing the application sequence with your college.
