Finding a promising welding, construction or automation course is only one part of the decision. A local workforce counselor can help you investigate whether that training fits an approved employment plan and funding route.
Find the local service center
The Michigan Works! directory connects residents to local agencies, including northern Michigan and the Upper Peninsula. You can also call 800-285-9675.
Do not create an association membership account to seek training aid. The site explicitly distinguishes membership from local employment services and unemployment-benefit requirements. Ask for a training-assistance appointment with the agency serving your area.
Ask for an assessment, not an assumed award
Michigan LEO's WIOA Adult overview describes local administration, eligibility and priority rules. Both employed and unemployed adults may have routes to services; an assessment determines what is appropriate.
Career counseling does not itself authorize a training payment. Ask which program is assessing you, what evidence is needed and who will confirm the decision. Share personal records only through the official secure process.
Bring a course-specific proposal
Prepare the credential name, provider, intake date, teaching location and itemized price. Add the practical question you are trying to answer: for example, whether a daytime lab schedule can fit your work and travel commitments.
Ask the counselor to verify the exact provider and course approval, any required screening and the order of enrollment and authorization. Do not pay first expecting reimbursement. Local funds, limits and intake availability can differ.
Coordinate support without double counting
This is Michigan's local WIOA route, not a second award to add to national WIOA estimates. Tell the counselor about pending college aid and request one coordinated plan showing what remains unfunded.
Compare Michigan funding options, including Reconnect, and use the Michigan training guide to identify questions for schools. An application, directory entry or approved training plan is not a promise of employment.
