Before choosing a technical certificate, ask the financial-aid office which funding route fits the credential and your education history. Similar scholarship names do not mean identical rules.
Start with eligibility, not a headline
The state eligibility FAQ describes qualifying school completion in 2023 or later, a 15-month enrollment window, Michigan residency and other conditions. It requires FAFSA, full-time study and satisfactory academic progress.
Have the college check your specific dates and residency evidence. No income cutoff for this pathway does not mean there are no eligibility requirements.
Identify what the guarantee covers
The Community College Guarantee overview describes in-district tuition, contact-hour charges and mandatory fees. An additional $1,000 bonus is restricted to Pell-eligible students.
This is the community-college pathway within the Michigan Achievement Scholarship, not an extra award to stack on top of it. Ask the aid office to show a coordinated estimate instead of adding advertised amounts yourself.
Make the remaining bill visible
Request your actual tuition classification. An out-of-district difference may remain even when the college is nearby. Add tools, protective equipment, books and commuting to your planning worksheet, then ask which items are included in the written offer.
Use a blank comparison sheet rather than assumed savings. Record the exact credential, class times, travel requirements, confirmed aid and the date each answer was provided. A manageable schedule is part of affordability.
Compare routes before committing
Do not infer that any standalone noncredit class qualifies. Ask whether the intended program, attendance load and start date fit the award rules, and what happens if your schedule changes.
